About This Project

The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, in Lira City (Uganda), is one of the country’s major sports projects, with capacity for 20,000 spectators and a complex that includes an athletics track, an indoor arena, a swimming pool and outdoor courts. LDA Audio Tech has equipped the entire venue with a NEO+ public address and voice alarm system.

A venue of this scale, built for large crowds and international competition, needs a public address and voice alarm system capable of covering every area of the complex with the same reliability. The EN 54 standard sets the benchmark for this type of sports facility.

NEO+ across the whole complex

LDA, together with local partner MFI, has equipped the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium with NEO+, LDA’s high-capacity public address and voice alarm range built for large-scale projects.

The system provides sound coverage across the entire venue, from the main stand to the auxiliary sports facilities, and isn’t limited to the common areas typical of this kind of project.

The installation combines EN 54 certified loudspeakers in various formats (ceiling, wall-mount and outdoor) to suit each area of the complex, alongside multi-zone emergency microphones and multi-source playback for background music and scheduled announcements.

The result is a single public address and voice alarm system capable of handling both daily public address and emergency evacuation, in a venue where thousands of people can gather for the same event.

A landmark sports complex in northern Uganda

The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium takes its name from John Akii-Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medallist, who won the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The complex, funded by the Government of Uganda through the National Council of Sports, represents an investment of approximately USD 130 million and is being built on around 18.5 hectares in Lira City.

Besides the main stadium, with its athletics track, the venue includes a multi-sport indoor arena seating 2,000, a 25-metre semi-Olympic swimming pool, and outdoor courts for basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton. The complex also features parking for 1,000 vehicles, a clubhouse and a 60-room hostel.

Construction is being carried out by Egyptian firm SAMCO National Construction Company, and the stadium is set to become one of northern Uganda’s major sports venues, with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as its first major milestone.
