ACTIVE COMPONENTS ON THE TRANSMISSION PATH ACCORDING TO EN 54-16 STANDARD<\/h3>\n

Switches, Routers and Media Converters<\/strong>\u00a0(like Fiber Optics) that are used to connect different parts of a distributed VACIE can have 2 ways of being understood:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. As another part of the distributed VACIE:<\/strong>therefore, this requires to be tested in the laboratory and certified according to EN 54-16.<\/li>\n
  2. As an active part of the transmission path only:\u00a0<\/strong>it requires external power supply, but there is no need\u00a0to test it according to EN 54-16.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In EN 54-16:2008 it was not clear how this was understood. There is no reference in EN 54-16:2008 about how switches, routers and media converters should be considered.<\/p>\n

    In TS 54-32:2014<\/strong> we can find more clarity about this:[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”30665″ img_size=”full” onclick=”link_image” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Basically,\u00a0it is responsibility\u00a0of the DESIGNER to verify that the network routers and switches operate correctly with the VACIE.\u00a0<\/strong>It is not said that they need to have EN 54-16 certificate.<\/p>\n

    This still had many ways of understanding. For example, for some people it was not clear if we still need to test it together with the VACIE in EN 54-16 tests. This question was brought to the European Committee CEN\/TC72\/WG23 (in charge of the standards EN 54 part 16, part 24 and part 32) and they clarified it with the following notes:<\/p>\n

    The Active Components on the Transmission Path (ACTP), like ethernet switch or router, was not specified in the EN\u00a054\u201116:2008 and as a result there are different interpretations with regard to these products when used in the transmission path. However, in EN\u00a0TS\u00a054\u201132:2015 the installation of such network cable components is specified and described as part of transmission paths. The lack of requirements has caused confusion related to certification of these devices.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    In addition,\u00a0certification of ACTP as part of the VACIE will require factory production control (FPC) inspections and the associated hardware and software design review.<\/strong>\u00a0This means the manufacturer has to have full control of the ACTP product build state (hardware and software) even when it is supplied by third party. For example, a software update needs to be certified before it can be used.<\/em><\/p>\n

    In order to address the above issues without jeopardizing the aim of the standard to set a minimum level of robustness for the VACIE, two concepts are introduced as follow:<\/em><\/p>\n
